Chambray and denim shirts are not the same thing
Similar blue colouring can hide different fabric constructions and very different wardrobe roles.

A blue shirt with pale threads running through it is often casually described as denim. It might be chambray instead. The distinction is in the weave: chambray is a plain weave, while denim is a twill. Colour alone will not tell you which one you are holding, and the name alone will not tell you how heavy the finished shirt feels.
This matters when you are trying to fill a gap. A light chambray shirt might sit comfortably beneath a jumper, whereas a substantial denim shirt could work more like a light outer layer. There are lighter denim shirts and heavier chambrays too, so inspect the actual garment rather than turning the terminology into a rigid rule.
Compare the details that affect wear
Look at the cloth from both sides, feel the thickness at a seam and bend a cuff between your fingers. Then look at the pockets and fastenings. Snap buttons, pointed yokes and twin chest pockets bring a different visual character from a plain button front with one simple pocket. Fabric is only one part of the shirt's personality.
For a straightforward introduction, a mid-blue chambray shirt with stone chinos gives the upper and lower halves a clear separation. Brown loafers make it a little sharper; understated trainers keep it casual. If stone feels too pale for daily use, olive trousers offer another route without repeating the shirt's blue.
A denim shirt can work with jeans, but give the combination a deliberate relationship. A lighter shirt above dark jeans is easy to read as two distinct pieces. Nearly matching blues can be attractive as well, though slight differences may look accidental if the fit and accessories are pulling in unrelated directions. Try the full outfit before dismissing or committing to it.
Choose a job, not a label
If you want an office shirt, check the collar under the jacket you plan to wear and see whether the hem stays tucked while seated. If you want a weekend layer, try it over the T-shirt you actually own. The useful shirt is the one that fits that job, even if it is not the fabric name you first searched for.
Indigo-dyed garments can have specific laundering or colour-transfer warnings. Read the product information and care label, especially before wearing a new shirt against pale upholstery or another light garment. Avoid assuming that a washed appearance means every care concern has already been removed. A little attention at purchase is easier than discovering an incompatible combination after a full day of wear.
