Choosing a linen shirt for everyday wear
Judge the weave, coverage and collar before deciding that every linen shirt belongs on holiday.

A linen shirt does not have to be reserved for a beach trip. Worn with ordinary chinos or jeans, it can simply be a textured everyday shirt. The challenge is choosing one that behaves the way you expect. A pale, loosely woven holiday shirt and a denser, softly tailored version may share a fibre name while looking quite different on the body.
Start with the label. A linen blend is not the same as pure linen, and the other fibres influence the hand and care instructions. Neither is automatically the better choice. Handle the actual cloth if possible, or study close-up photographs and the composition when shopping online.
Check coverage in useful light
Hold the shirt up to daylight and then try it on. Pale fabric may reveal an undershirt, a dark waistband or whatever is in the chest pocket. That may be perfectly acceptable for the setting, but it should be intentional. If an undershirt is necessary, try the complete combination: an extra layer changes both the appearance and how warm the outfit feels.
For an everyday first purchase, muted blue, olive or a natural off-white can be easy to combine with trousers already in the wardrobe. White is also workable, but do not choose it solely because it is the standard holiday image. Check whether the shirt creates enough contrast with your most-used light trousers.
Decide how you will wear the hem
A shirt worn untucked needs a length you like from the back as well as the front. Excess length can look particularly noticeable in fluid fabric. If you intend to tuck it, sit down and reach forward to make sure there is enough length to stay put. Avoid buying a very short style and hoping a tighter waistband will keep it tucked.
An open-neck shirt with the sleeves casually turned back works with straight cotton trousers and simple shoes. For a slightly sharper version, leave the sleeves down, tuck the shirt and use a restrained belt. A camp collar creates a different effect from a conventional collar with a stand; choose the neckline that fits the situations you actually dress for.
Creases will become part of the outfit. If a perfectly smooth finish is essential throughout the day, linen may not be the most comfortable choice psychologically, even if you like its texture. Press according to the label when you want a cleaner starting point, then allow normal wear to happen. There is little value in buying a relaxed shirt that makes you worry every time you sit down.
