Colours that work with olive trousers

Read the particular shade of olive before deciding which neutrals or accents to add.

Olive-toned trousers worn with an untucked light shirt.

Olive can lean towards yellow, grey or brown, so two pairs labelled the same colour may need different companions. Put your trousers beside the tops you already own in daylight. You are looking for combinations you enjoy, not a universal colour formula.

Light neutrals are an easy beginning

Off-white and cream create a softer contrast than brilliant white, especially with a dusty olive. A plain tee and casual shoes make a straightforward warm-weather outfit. For cooler days, use an oatmeal knit instead. Notice the texture as well as the colour: a rough knit and cotton twill trousers have a different character from a smooth polo and sharply pressed chinos.

Grey can work too. A light grey sweatshirt keeps the outfit casual, while a charcoal jumper creates a darker, quieter arrangement. If two muted colours seem to merge into a muddy whole, add a clearer light or dark element through the tee or shoes rather than adding more similar shades.

Blue gives you several options

Navy is a useful partner for olive. Try a navy polo or overshirt, with a light tee beneath the latter if you want separation near the face. Pale blue shirting creates a lighter result and can make olive chinos feel suitable for a relaxed office where the dress code allows them.

Denim introduces blue with visible variation. A faded denim jacket over olive trousers avoids the near-match problem of some double-denim outfits. Keep the top beneath it simple if the jacket already has contrasting stitching and pockets. This allows the different textures to do the work.

For colour beyond neutrals, consider a muted rust, burgundy or pink. Try the garment at home with the trousers before deciding that a colour is outside your range. You may prefer only a small amount, such as a shirt partly visible under a jacket, or you may enjoy a full coloured top.

Footwear can be brown, black, cream or another shade that relates to the outfit. There is no need to own a special olive-trouser shoe. Use the formality and weight of the trousers as the guide: rugged cargo pockets invite different combinations from smooth tapered chinos. The best palette is the one that helps your existing pieces work together, not one that creates a new shopping list.
