How closely should a belt match your shoes
Aim for a coherent colour relationship rather than an exact sample-card match.

Matching a belt to shoes is a useful convention, especially in more tailored outfits, but it does not usually require identical leather from the same factory. Colour family, lightness and surface matter more than chasing a perfect shade under every kind of light.
Keep sharper outfits quieter
With black shoes and a conventional tailored outfit, a black belt is a straightforward choice when the trousers use one. It avoids introducing another strong colour at the waist. If the trousers have side adjusters and fit securely, a belt may not be needed at all.
With brown shoes, look for a belt that belongs in a similar tonal range. A very pale tan belt above dark chocolate shoes creates a stronger contrast than two slightly different medium browns. Either can be intentional, but the quieter relationship is easier when you want the outfit to feel restrained.
Consider texture as well as colour
A smooth leather belt and suede shoes do not have to match surfaces exactly. In fact, a little variation can make the outfit feel less like a packaged set. The important question is whether the materials belong to the same general level of formality.
A rugged, heavily decorated belt may look disconnected from very sleek shoes even if both are black. Conversely, a plain brown belt can work with several casual shoes whose shades are not identical.
Relax the rule when the outfit is casual
With jeans, trainers and an untucked shirt, the belt may barely be visible. There is little reason to buy a white belt simply because the trainers are white. Choose something that works with the trousers and the rest of the wardrobe.
A woven or fabric belt can also introduce a colour that is not present in the shoes. Repeat that colour elsewhere only if it helps the outfit; forced matching can become more noticeable than the original difference.
Use daylight to compare close shades if you are uncertain. Indoor lighting can make brown leather look warmer or darker. Then step back and assess the complete outfit rather than holding the accessories side by side indefinitely.
The purpose of coordination is to remove an unwanted distraction, not create a shopping requirement for every pair of shoes. A small set of belts in colours and widths suited to your actual trousers is usually more useful than a collection of exact matches you rarely need.
